Frequently Asked Questions

Q What is the main format for information and learning (documents/reading? quizzes and recap? video?)?

A The study is broken up into two areas of course materials including the actual unit of theory and the assessment used to measure your comprehension of that theory.

Both are presented as html slides within a structure workspace.   This means you need only access to one of the preferred browsers including;

  • Internet Explorer 8

  • Google Chrome

Q What is the main format for evaluation/examination (timed online examination? or emailed exam papers?)

A Assessments are undertaken using a multiple answer format.   That is a question is asked and a number of potential answers are displayed for the student to select which he/she feels is the most appropriate answer based on the theory presented.

Assessment activities range from 10 to 30 questions, depending on the unit undertaken and the complexity of competency you should be able to illustrate.

Most units rely on text based questions and answers, however some units also incorporate audio, film and images as part of the assessment question format.

Q What is the average time taken by students to complete the package (understanding of course that this would vary considerably)?

A Each level of learning is assigned a specific timeframe for completion.   These include;

  • Award Courses (3 months)

  • Short Courses (2 months)

  • Individual Units of Competency (1 Month)

Initial timeframes are set based on the level of study you undertake and is integrated into your account.   However, we are mindful of the field commitments of our students and sometimes a student account will expire while the student is still moving through the learning.

If the student can prove the basis of extension required, the HDLC in most cases will extend access to the course by a further 30 days.

During the initial timeframe, students can access the learning whenever and wherever they like.

This flexibility enables students to determine their own study schedule, one of the key advantages of studying with the HDLC.

Q Which ngo's/io's do endorse your courses and which specific courses?

A For the most part, HDLC study options are not endorsed by any particular client organization or steering group for the following reasons;

  • The nature of humanitarian activity and need changes on a regular basis requiring constant update and amendment of course material.

  • The HDLC wishes to remain flexible in its course design methodology and not have to seek revalidation from organizations who are committed to other activities.

  • No such training validation entity exists yet within the Humanitarian Sector to effectively regulate the conduct and approach of training organizations.

  • The HDLC has been and remains the only Online dedicated commercial training  provider for the sector which makes external endorsement difficult from those who do not share our 6 years of training delivery experience.

What we can illustrate however is not who endorses the HDLC, but who has and continue to use our training delivery services as an accessible, affordable and creative alternative to classroom based training.   Here is a brief snapshot;

Q What certification is issued upon successful completion of the course?

A Once you have successfully completed your chosen study option you will have instant access to your certificate via your electronic student account.   At the click of a button you can download, save and or print your certificate and retain for your records.

Q How many attempts do we get to write the final test?

A Attempts are calculated only during assessment activities.   At the base level, you will have a Unit of Competency which comprises the theory component.   You are free to review the Unit of Competency as many times as you need to in order to understand the key theory points which may be assessed during the assessment.

However, when you begin the assessment activity you will be allowed five (5) attempts to reach the standard pass percentage of 65%.

Q When writing the final test can we refer back to the slides?

A No.   We are not trying to make it more difficult for you, simply put the Learning Management System does not allow you to run both the Unit of Competency and the Assessment Activity at the same time.

To overcome that and to ensure that each student has the very best chance to illustrate competency, the HDLC provides a pdf downloadable version of each Unit of Competency which can be referenced while undertaking any Assessment Activity.

Q May I have a certificate clearly mentioning the scores I got = 82 %

A No.   Here is why.   The HDLC offeres a competency based curriculum where students must reach a pass percentage mark to illustrate understanding of theory and action principals and therefore that they are competent in the subject.

A student achieving 80% is no more competent than a student achieving 70% as both have surpassed the baseline requirement of competency which is 65%.

This is particularly important in the world of vocational training and negates the class system often associated with alternative grading methodology.

Q Is there one final examination or are there separate assignments as well?

A That depends on which study option you choose.

An Award Course is made up of several Units of competency all of which have a specific Assessment Activity associated with them.   So, if there are 10 Units of Competency, there will be 10 Assessments activities.   This is the same for Short Courses.

The only Award Course exception is Certificate I Logistics Procurement.   During this study option students undertake 10 Units of Competency and are faced with only one final Assessment Activity at the very end.

For those undertaking an individual Unit of Competency on its own, you will complete only one Assessment Activity.

Q Could you please clarify how long it takes to process the payment for your courses.

A The process varies across the two course fee payment options.

PayPal – for those of you who enrol and pay for your course using our PayPal secure transaction facility you will have instant access to your chosen study option.   How long does it take?, well how quick is your internet connection?

Western Union – for those of you using Western Union, the HDLC will process and make available your electronic student account within 24 hours of receiving your course fee payment.   The delay is largely up to you and how long it takes for you to make the required payment and notify the HDLC of the transaction details.
